The State Legislature, under its constitutional authority to "create such other courts as may be necessary," has created municipal courts in each of the incorporated cities of the State. By 2002, there were municipal courts operating in approximately 894 Texas cities and towns. The larger cities are served by multiple municipal courts, the number depending on the municipality's population and needs.
Municipal courts have exclusive original jurisdiction in the enforcement of city ordinances. Municipal Court along with Justice of the Peace courts have concurrent jurisdiction over Penal Code class C violations. Municipal Courts can fine a specific amount for traffic and other Class C Misdemeanors. Fine ranges can be $0.00 to $500.00.
If you were issued a citation, you must
appear by the date written on your citation, bonds, summons, or release papers. You or your attorney may appear in person in open court or by regular mail. A PHONE CALL DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN APPEARANCE
. Failure to appear by the date noted may result in an arrest warrant
being issued. If a complaint is received by the Court against you, you will be notified by regular mail of your court appearance date.
The City of Canyon updates the Municipal Court Warrant List
on a regular basis. The status of some warrants are listed with a name. The status codes are: A - Active; CS - Community Service; PP - Payment Plan. If your name is on this list and you have not contacted the Court Clerk, please call the Municipal Court Clerk at 806-655-5023.
Payment options for open violations are available. Please Contact the Canyon Municipal Court at 806-655-5023 or come by at 301 16th Street for more information.
